Ask Dr. Brownback

Picture
Last week, many women and well, even a lot of men - took to Governor Sam Brownback's Facebook page to ask him various reproductive health questions.

The press is dubbing it "sarcasm bombing" - I say it's drawing attention to the absolute absurdity of these latest round of regulations.

Brownback Tells Women - Go Work Somewhere Else

Picture
“What the president basically said is if you are church that does not believe in this — and the Catholic Church has problems with, the official Catholic Church, amongst other institutions, have problems with paying for contraceptives,” the Kansas governor explained. “You have a number of religious groups who saying, ‘We don’t want to pay for so-called abortifacients, these have morning after pill-type effects. And this is against our religious beliefs.’ And the president was saying, ‘You got to pay for it.’ And they were saying, ‘This is against our view life is sacred.’”

“That’s not denying women’s rights,” he insisted. “If a woman then wants birth control, go work somewhere else.” Read more here.

Kansas House Draws-Up Radical Anti-Abortion Legislation

Picture
Included in this disgrace of a bill -
"Among the most contested provisions of the bill is the section that would exempt a doctor from a medical malpractice suit if a woman claims the physician withheld information about potential birth defects to prevent her from having an abortion. In addition, a woman would not be able to sue if she suffers health damage from a pregnancy as a result of information withheld from her to prevent an abortion. A wrongful death suit could still be filed, however, if the mother died."

Giant Pink #FAIL

Picture
The Susan G. Komen Foundation announced today that it will no longer issue grants to Planned Parenthood. These grants were used to provide breast exams to poverty-level women.

This move comes after years of harassment of the Komen Foundation by Anti-Choice zealots. Apparently, the recent additions to the Komen board made this possible.

ProChoice Kansas Awards 1st (of hopefully many) KICKASS awards!

Picture
I had hoped to give the first of these to someone here in Kansas - but well, when something so awesome comes along - it doesn't matter what state they are from!

I will be sending Senator Janet Howell of Virginia a ProChoice Kansas sticker (probably in the USA design - so she can use it) for her awesomeness!

So I know you are asking yourself - "What did this state Senator from Virginia do?!?"

She did this: "To protest a bill that would require women to undergo an ultrasound before having an abortion, Virginia State Sen. Janet Howell (D-Fairfax) on Monday attached an amendment that would require men to have a rectal exam and a cardiac stress test before obtaining a prescription for erectile dysfunction medication."

And THAT is why she is the 1st recipient of the ProChoice Kansas KICKASS Award!

Governor Brownback Attends a Pep Rally

Picture

"Hundreds of people rallied at the steps of the Statehouse today in support of laws that would curtail or eliminate abortions in Kansas and provide information to women considering an abortion.

“Kansas is now a pro-life state, and we’re not going back,” Gov. Sam Brownback said to a roaring applause from a crowd of more than 1,000."

Editorial Comment: I would like to point out that nearly 100 of the attendees were kids from a local Catholic School - more on the Blog!

Happy Roe Day!

39 years ago today - the Supreme Court ruled that women have the right to determine their reproductive destiny.  We continue to fight for the unimpeded right to do just that. With the legislative sessions just getting started around the country - it's obvious that the struggle continues.

We must make the commitment to one another that WE WILL NEVER GO BACK!

Abortion in the United States - from the Guttmacher Institute

When fighting for reproductive choice it is easy to get bogged down in the defeats, the erosion of rights, the violence and dehumanization perpetrated by the Anti-Abortion movement.  However, we must stay focused on the fact that women's lives, families and basic human rights are at stake in this fight.  Women have the right to determine the direction of their lives, the size of their families, and they know best the economic realities of their individual situations.  That is the reality surrounding the continued fight for Abortion Rights.  - Nicki
