Method to My Madness

Why not something more like this?
I have heard a few concerns expressed regarding the logo for ProChoice Kansas.  First, I want to thank you all for caring enough to ask and for giving me feedback.  I feel like now is a good time to explain my thought process and what I'm trying to accomplish here.

I was born post-Roe, however, I was raised to be conscious of history.
The coat hanger has always signified two things:

                       Mommie Dearest and Illegal Abortion.

I have been on the fringes of the prochoice movement in Kansas since the first attempted defunding of Planned Parenthood - just before the assassination of Dr. Tiller. I was a part of the martyr guard at his funeral, I helped defend Dr. Carhart's Bellevue, Nebraska clinic and I promptly flamed out.  Times of deep emotional upheaval tend to do that to a person - I think a lot of us here are still in that frame of mind.  However, when it became obvious that most of the remaining clinics in our state would be closed down.  It wasn't just the usual depression and resentment - I felt rage!
Now, I don't have the means to take off on a crusade - but I'm mildly techie and felt that I might be able to raise some awareness - and maybe some money.  Mostly, it was a way to feel like I was doing something.

When I was working on the design - I wanted something simple and something that provoked a strong reaction.  Most often you see pictures like the one above with a caption of "Never Go Back" or something to that effect (I actually used a similar design when I created the abortion rights twibbon).  But the honest truth is for many women in our state and in parts of the country.
                                                 WE HAVE GONE BACK!
Many areas - including Wichita - have no access to abortion care. The closest clinic is three hours away. We have the right to our reproductive choices, but few ways to act on them. American Progress recently had an article of similar thought. I realize to some, the image that coat hanger represents is an uncomfortable one - to some they might feel that it focuses on the wrong thing.  However, in my mind - it's the truth. Abortion has always been a part of society - it's just a matter of how dangerous we want it to be.

If you've made it this far - First, congrats! Second, please consider a purchase from the Shop!

When are you going to blog in support of choice for men, where men too get the right to opt out of parenthood post-conception, just as women have that right. Just as women can choose, during the first trimester, whether they want to be parents or not, men should and must have that same right - albeit not to interfere with her right to abort or not.

Whether he opts out or not, she can still seek and get an abortion. Her rights don't interfere with his and his rights don't interfere with hers.

I look forward to a world where everyone, regardless of gender, will have reproductive equality and choice.

Eric,

First of all thank you for visiting this blog - and for your feedback.

I will tell you this is a subject that I have discussed with many of my feminist friends and generally the feelings are mixed - but I think a lot of the hesitancy comes from the current climate surrounding reproductive choice and a whole host of other socio-economic factors.

Let me say this much - I am not wholly opposed to what you are saying. I don't believe anyone should be forced into parenthood.

I would like to extend an offer to you - would you like to write a Guest Blog regarding this subject? If so - please use the Contact Us! button above.
